The male Superb Blue Wren is an arresting electric blue, whilst its female mate is nutmeg. The young males are often mistaken for the females before developing their magnificent colour on maturation. Blue Wrens are common on Kangaroo Island but rarely seen elsewhere. This is not entirely surprising as the island is well known as an ornithologist’s paradise.
Sometimes referred to as the Superb Fairy Wren, these fascinating birds are the subject of a fascinating and long-running study into birdsong and the effect of the mother bird’s vocalisations on the long-term survival of her tiny chicks.
