Small Leafy Seadragon, Fred Peters

$195.00

The leafy seadragon (phycodurus eques) is South Australia’s marine emblem.

Diving enthusiasts with a passion for this exquisite creature often travel to South Australia, diving the waters of Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula in search of the ultimate close-up experience. Australian jewellery designer Fred Peters has captured the leafy in this delicate sterling silver necklace – the perfect memento of any diver’s leafy seadragon pilgrimage.

When studying closely the anatomical form of the leafy seadragon you appreciate the ability of such a fragile creature to adapt to its environment. Its ability to survive is dependent entirely on its camouflage, becoming almost invisible amongst the underwater vegetation.

The leafy seadragon is extraordinarily beautiful and ridiculously complex, comes in a range of colours and is in many ways still a mystery. As an artist, silversmith Fred Peters says the sheer complexity of the animal presents for him, a major challenge.

After many years of creating a larger cuttlefish cast leafy sea dragon necklace, Fred has delivered what he considers the smallest piece he can possibly produce saw piercing in solid sterling silver sheet.

Piece features Leafy Seadragon, also known as Glauert’s seadragon, Phycodurus eques.
