Exhibiting Artist Cecilia Gunnarsson spends as much time as possible at her second home at Emu Bay. Close to the sea is important, walking the shore, clambering over rocks, and swimming in the ocean. These are experiences she seeks to capture in her artwork.
“For me as an artist I really need to feel I belong to a landscape. I want to have a relationship with my subject, immerse myself in this spot and deeply connect to what I am going to paint. Later in my studio I recall those experiences and feelings and paint from memory”.
Cecilia considers herself privileged to be an artist, to have time to commit to her practice, and time to think deeply about the things that matter to her, such as our connections to and the fragility of the natural world. Painting landscape, seascapes or still life require close observation of light, reflection, colour, and composition. These beautiful works are conveyed to us through the eyes of a Scandinavian artist who has walked and swam in South Australia for half her life… immersed in nature, the ocean, and her studio.
